"Shinjuku HEAD POWER" and the history of Japanese music venues

【Music Venue [Shinjuku HEAD POWER】

This website provides information mainly from Shinjuku HEAD POWER, a music venue in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan.

【Live House Shinjuku HEAD POWER】

HEAD POWER was established in 1968 as a small-scale music venue and is the oldest rock music venue in Japan where drums can be played.

The company was founded only 20 years after World War II, and it was a rare time for people to become familiar with Western culture on a daily basis. Under these circumstances, people called cultural figures such as great writers and movie directors at that time proposed the establishment of HEAD POWER, which originated from "a place where the power of Japan's brain gathers" near Shinjuku Golden Gai, a bar district with many small shops in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

【Departure in Japanese Culture that Remains Strong】

In Japan, there is a culture of taking off your shoes when you enter a room, but at the time of the establishment of this store, there were times when this kind of lifestyle culture remained even in music venues. At that time, HEAD POWER was operated by taking off shoes when entering the store and sitting directly on the floor called Tatami (* 1) to listen to music.

It was one of the starting points for the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, and it was a rare business at that time.

(* What is Tatami?)

It is famous as a floor material for dojos such as judo and aikido. It is made by sticking a material woven with rush onto the surface of a board.

【Holy Land of Subculture】

In the 30 years since its establishment, the company has been holding music events centered around rock, but at the same time, it has played an important role as a source of subcultures that rarely appear in the mass media.

In those days, when the Internet was not available to the general public, it became a hot place for underground artists to gather, relying on published subcal magazines and advertisements.
